United Airlines Adds 18 Newark Routes Through 2027

Simple Flying reports the routes range from Seoul and St. Croix to secondary European cities, with most operating seasonally.

United Airlines

United Airlines is adding 18 nonstop routes from Newark Liberty International Airport, with service starting between April 2026 and June 2027, Simple Flying reports. The expansion includes four European routes that debuted in spring 2026 and are already confirmed to return next summer, plus 14 more launching later.

The routes

Europe dominates the list. New destinations include Split, Croatia; Bari, Italy; Glasgow, Scotland; Santiago de Compostela, Spain; Luxembourg City, Luxembourg; Ljubljana, Slovenia; Olbia and Catania in Italy; Ibiza and Valencia in Spain; Marseille, France; and Terceira in the Azores, Portugal. Outside Europe, United adds daily year-round 787-9 service to Seoul Incheon, weekly winter service to St. Croix, and restores four domestic markets: Charlottesville, Knoxville, Northwest Arkansas and Omaha.

Seasonal strategy

Twelve of the 18 routes are seasonal. United has confirmed that all four 2026 European additions will return in summer 2027. Patrick Quayle, United's senior vice president of global network planning, told Simple Flying: "Everything from summer 2026 is coming back. We're not dropping any routes in order to fund the next round of expansion."

Seasonal scheduling lets United move aircraft between markets. Widebodies used on European routes in summer shift to Caribbean and Latin American routes in winter, while the winter-only St. Croix service fills a gap when Caribbean demand rises.

The A321XLR's role

The Airbus A321XLR is key to opening thinner markets. United will use it for year-round Luxembourg service and summer seasonal flights to Ibiza, Valencia and Marseille. The aircraft has 150 seats, including 20 Polaris suites and 12 Premium Plus seats, offering a premium product without committing the capacity of a 767 or 787. Quayle said United would not have launched the Luxembourg route without the XLR.

What this means for you

Travelers from the New York area gain nonstop access to eight European destinations that no other US airline serves, giving you a reason to book early for summer 2027. If you're flexible, the seasonal schedule means peak summer options but fewer choices in shoulder seasons.

"People look to United to tell them where to fly," Quayle said, describing the airline's approach to finding destinations that don't yet have strong demand.
