American Plans Flagship Lounge At Charlotte, Largest Admirals Club

The airline details its upcoming premium lounges at CLT, including a flagship lounge for the first time and the system's biggest Admirals Club.

American Airlines shared new details today about its planned lounge expansion at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), its second-largest hub. The project includes the airport's first Flagship Lounge and a new Admirals Club that will be the largest in American's network, One Mile at a Time reports.

The new Admirals Club is expected to span roughly 40,000 square feet, according to a press release reported by the outlet. That space will be dedicated solely to the Admirals Club, not combined with the Flagship Lounge, as some earlier reports had suggested. The rendering shows a design inspired by Charlotte's tree canopy and textile heritage, with spa-style shower suites, bars, serveries, and zones for relaxing, dining, working and recharging.

Flagship Lounge location still unclear

American has not said where the Flagship Lounge will go or when construction will start. One Mile at a Time notes the earlier plan was for the mezzanine level near the Concourse D and E connector, but the press release today included no further details on the flagship space, leaving some uncertainty about whether the plan has changed.

"That makes me wonder if something about the plan has changed," the outlet writes.

One possibility: the existing primary Admirals Club, which the airport is expected to reclaim for other use, could become the Flagship Lounge. But American has not confirmed that.

Timeline: Still years away

Construction on the Admirals Club will begin sometime this year, but there is no opening date. One Mile at a Time estimates the lounge may not open until 2028 or later, and the Flagship Lounge has no construction timeline at all.

For travelers connecting through Charlotte, American's current Admirals Club is described by One Mile at a Time as "an outdated and crowded disaster." The investment is welcome, but passengers should not expect relief soon.
