American Airlines to build biggest Admirals Club at Charlotte hub

The new 40,000-square-foot lounge will be the carrier's largest when it opens, part of a broader investment at its second-busiest hub.

American Airlines will build a huge new Admirals Club lounge at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), a badly-needed facility.

The Points Guy reported Tuesday that American Airlines plans to build a new Admirals Club at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) that will be the largest in the carrier's network.

The lounge will cover over 40,000 square feet and offer shower suites, bars and seating areas. Work is expected to start later this year, though the airline did not provide an estimated opening date. The current Admirals Clubs at the airport will stay open while the new one is built.

The new club will be located on the mezzanine level of the main atrium, which passengers enter after clearing security. It will be easily reachable from CLT's A, B and C concourses, a moderate walk from the D concourse, and a longer walk from the E gates, where many regional flights depart.

"Designing a lounge that gives our customers more space to relax, work and recharge is our top priority," Heather Garboden, American's chief customer officer, said in a statement.

Charlotte is American's second-busiest hub, trailing only Dallas Fort Worth. The Points Guy notes the existing lounges are dated and often overcrowded. The new club is part of a larger lounge investment at CLT that also includes a higher-tier Flagship Lounge and a grab-and-go Provisions outpost that opened on the A concourse.

Other lounges are incoming at CLT: a Capital One Lounge, a second American Express outpost, and Delta's Sky Club that opened less than two years ago.

This new Admirals Club, once complete, should ease pressure on American's current Charlotte lounges.
