Boeing 777 Captain Pay at Top 6 Airlines in 2026
From tax-free Dubai to high-tax Germany, the real take-home varies wildly, according to Simple Flying's analysis.

Simple Flying crunched the numbers on what Boeing 777 captains earn at six of the world's biggest operators, and the answer depends a lot on where they land.
The headline salaries range from about $120,000 at Lufthansa on the low end to over $598,000 at United Airlines at the high end. But taxes, housing allowances, and profit sharing change the real picture.
The big take-home differences
**Emirates** offers no personal income tax in Dubai, so a captain making $144,000 to $320,000 keeps every dollar. That makes a $250,000 tax-free paycheck worth more than $350,000 at a US airline with a 42% tax rate.
**Cathay Pacific** in Hong Kong also looks good: captains earn $320,000 to $485,000, and Hong Kong caps salary tax at 15%. That means they keep roughly 80 to 85 percent of that.
**Singapore Airlines** pays $194,000 to $298,000, and with an effective tax rate around 18%, senior captains take home $180,000 to $245,000.
**American Airlines** and **United Airlines** have the highest raw pay. American's top-scale 777 captains earn $455.96 per hour, with annual base pay of $394,000 to $410,000. After around 42% in taxes and deductions, that's roughly $228,000 to $238,000. United's year-12 777 captains can total $598,000 by 2027, taking home about $347,000 after tax.
**Lufthansa** captains earn $120,000 to $330,000 on paper, but Germany's 42 to 45% tax rate cuts net pay to as low as $70,000 at the bottom and $185,000 for senior flyers.
"Emirates also provides company-provided accommodation, education allowances, and extensive medical coverage, making the compensation even more compelling." (Simple Flying)
What this means for families
If you're planning a big trip and wondering how far a pilot's salary goes, this breakdown shows that geography matters more than the number on the paycheck. A 777 captain in Dubai can bank a lot more of that salary than one in Frankfurt, even if the base numbers look similar.
All figures come from Simple Flying's report based on 2026 salary data, pilot compensation reports, and tax structures.
