United Plans Starlink on Over 1,000 Mainline Aircraft by 2027
The carrier is accelerating installations to more than 20 planes per week across 17 maintenance stations, aiming for a major connectivity advantage over Delta and American.

United Airlines is speeding up its Starlink satellite internet installation timeline. It now plans to equip more than 1,000 mainline aircraft with the system by May 2027, as reported by the View From The Wing.
That means retrofitting more than 20 planes every week across 17 maintenance stations. The airline is spreading the work geographically so installations happen during routine maintenance windows and keep individual aircraft out of service for less time.
United has already installed Starlink on hundreds of planes. In July, the carrier said more than 450 aircraft had the service and expected nearly 1,000 by the end of the year. That count included regional jets. The dual-cabin United Express regional fleet is now nearly fully equipped.
The June 2026 target called for roughly 60 widebodies to receive Starlink during that year. The first widebody with Starlink entered transatlantic service in June 2026. United expects to equip its entire widebody fleet next year.
Why United is pushing fast
United's own data shows Starlink-equipped flights have Wi-Fi satisfaction scores more than twice as high as aircraft using other onboard connectivity systems, according to the airline's second-quarter results.
The carrier is using its early lead to pull customers from competitors. Business Insider reported that United has run a "Switch To Better Wi-Fi" offer that lets eligible Delta or American frequent flyers get a temporary United status match, potentially reaching Premier 1K level. United has also targeted travelers complaining about Delta's Wi-Fi on social media, promoting its faster service.
The timing is strategic. Delta chose Amazon's satellite technology for a future rollout, but deployment isn't expected until 2028 and will initially cover about 500 aircraft. American Airlines announced Starlink for more than 500 Airbus planes starting in 2027. Southwest and Alaska are also working on Starlink programs.
Where the rollout stands now
The independent United Starlink Tracker, which lists aircraft with the system, shows 617 of United's 1,675 total aircraft as equipped. That includes 265 mainline planes and 352 United Express aircraft.
Mainline penetration is still relatively low. The new plan would bring more than 1,000 mainline aircraft online within just several months, a substantial acceleration.
For travelers, the experience depends on whether their specific aircraft has been retrofitted. The regional fleet is much further ahead. The mainline push is now the central focus.
United is betting that reliable, high-speed free Wi-Fi can influence where customers choose to fly, especially business travelers and frequent flyers who want to work and stream in flight. If the airline maintains its pace, Starlink could become a defining characteristic of the United fleet by May 2027.
